well, see. theoretically using maya's physics engine can produce deformations in the form of 'cloth simulations' however, for them to look right keyframed blendshapes are the way. Since as you know, a living being is not made of just one material, so in order to simulate that, you'd need a whole host of details added which is much more work than worthwhile.
