It's a better mold than what I can make.

The thing about 2D art is to create the illusion that it actually looks 3D. This includes certain principles and elements to create it (such as perspective). From here, I think it looks nice, especially the talon behind the sole.

Hey, I got an idea.

Why don't you create shapes that mold like a 3D foot. That way you can see grid lines and how they work.

Oh boo...

How about some clay? You can form half of your foot at a time and combine them. Plus, it gives a nice "clay"-ish scent on your toes. :P

lookin' good Ragnos :)

...and if you want my unqualified opinion on the 3D modeling idea, I'd use google-sketchup (or blender if you've the time to figure it out) to pull together a quick digital model, then just shove a .png of the model into ms paint or gimp or artweaver or whatever and do whatever tweaking suites your fancy.
:worried: course i should try that myself at some point

How about GIMP? It's a powerful free drawing program.

I agree, you probably need to try some better software. I've never used GIMP myself but I've heard it's one of the best free packages you can get.

The only other piece of advice I would offer to you if you want an easy way to make your paws look more realistic is to try some cell shading. I did a simple Cell Shading Tutorial on Eccentricities last year; here are the images from it which might provide you with a bit of guidance:
