Compare to this photo. The base wouldn't be dead center of the heel either... that would just be uncomfortable.
As much as I take your point on the inaccuracte base positioning, I think you must be misinterpreting the perspective on that back claw; it
is curling towards the viewer (like the photo), not away from. Otherwise it'd be a bit weird! Lol!
