The Woulfe Pack : Episode One : New In Town : Act One : Scene One
Kurt was riding his bike down the two lane road, it was his first day as a delivery boy, he had just moved to the town of Red River with his dad, who got a job at the newspaper, doing what he'd dream he'd do, running his own newspaper, granted the town wasn't that big, everybody knew everybody else in town, a few dozen buildings and homes near a river that had red sand under it, that's why it was called Red River, the town was named after it.
Kurt hated moving here, mostly because he was used to the city, he'd never been up in the mountains like this, it was so open and exposed, even though this area was a valley nestled between one mountain range and another one, it was quite a large valley, but the only town in it was Red River, the rest of the valley was Forrest, Meadows, A massive lake, and the river itself that ran from the lake, it was pretty, but Kurt didn't care for that, he missed the skyscrapers, the hustle & bustle, and his friends.
Kurt was pumping his legs on the ten speed, where was the place he was going to anyway with this delivery ? He stopped and looked at the sketchy & crudely drawn map he was giving by the grocery man, he wonder if all new delivery boys were giving this route to the middle of nowhere. 3465 Rural Route 12 the address said on the map, he knew that meant he had to get off the paved road and onto a dirt one.
Kurt looked around to see if there was a sign pointing to Rural Route 12, just his luck it was a few yards away UPHILL, we didn't say it was good luck. Kurt grumbled & switched gears as he went uphill to get to the dirt road. At the top of the hill he saw the dirt road winding into a redwood tree Forrest, well, Kurt though, at least I'll be out of the sun. Kurt coasted down the gentle slope as it lead into the redwood trees, it was darker under the canopy then he thought it would be, but nice and cool.
The dirt road twisted this way and that way as it went though the redwood trees. Kurt felt uneasy, as if he was being watched, he remembered all those stories as a child about being in the woods alone, the stories ended badly for the person in the woods alone. He cursed under his breath, no wonder no one else volunteered for this delivery, he bet the other delivery boys were back at the store laughing at him for being so gullible for taking this job.
Next time Kurt thought, I'm not taking this, I'll take any other delivery job, just not this.... one.... Before Kurt was a massive redwood tree, larger then the others, so large in fact that there was a door in it's trunk, with windows to each side of it, above the door it read 3465 carved out of wood. There was also a crude hanging sign next to the door that had The Woulfe Pack written onto it, that must of been burnt into the sign with a magnifying glass. Well, Kurt thought, this must be the place. He parked the bike by leaning it against one of the other trees close by.
The Tree House, for that's what Kurt was going to call it, was in a clearing, seemed all by itself out there. Kurt turned to get the bags out of the baskets on the ten speed, again he felt like he was being watched from somewhere. Kurt turned around quickly, did that curtain on the right window just close ? Kurt thought it was his imagination. He then walked toward the tree house. It turned out to be a lot bigger then he thought, quite a lot bigger then he thought. The main door towered over his head by several feet, in fact it had a smaller door built into it that was more human sized.
Kurt felt like Jack in the story of Jack & the beanstalk, but that was a story Kurt thought, this is real. He placed the bags on the welcome mat, he looked for all the world like a midget standing there before the massive door with the more his size door in it, well, might as well get this over with Kurt thought. His curiosity over-rode his fear to run back to the bike & get the heck out of there & never look back. He did the bravest thing anyone has ever done delivering to here, he knocked on the smaller door.
Kurt was half expecting someone to open the smaller door and say GOTCHA. Instead what he heard what sounded like chains moving, heavy ones on the other side of the doors, then large gears grinding, then the LARGER door swung open, it was dark inside the tree house Kurt couldn't see much, except two large glowing yellow eyes, far above his own head in the shadow of the doorway. "Ah, I see you brought us lunch" came a voice that sounded like it was eating gravel all it's life. Kurt nearly fainted as a large hand covered in fur darted out snagged the two bags and darted back in. Did that hand only have 4 fingers Kurt thought, it happened so quickly.
Some large gold coins were tossed at Kurt, he suddenly remembered to move & catch them as best as he could. "For your trouble" the voice from the darkness said again. Then the huge door shut & once again gears turning, chains rattling. Did that just happen Kurt thought, he didn't want to believe it, yet he had proof with the large gold coins he now had with him, he pinched himself, oh yes, he was wide awake, all of that did just happen. Kurt wanted to know more, but he couldn't right now, he was locked out of the tree house but good, whoever lives here must earn his trust before letting him in.
Kurt put the coins into the bikes baskets one in each one, to help with balance due to the size of them, each as big as one of the wheels on the ten speed. He got onto his bike & started to peddle off, I'm going to find out who lives there, or what lives there he thought as he rode away, after all he'll be back to deliver there again later today. Little did he know he was being watched from inside the tree house. "This one is different, he wasn't afraid, he didn't run off." one voice said. "We shall see." another voice answered, a huge fur covered hand closed the curtain.
