And so the story begins...

The day had just begun, the sun's light was just peeking above the mountainous horizon. It was the day a new litter was to be born and one of the litter was soon to become Alpha of the group she'd be born into. All the Meerkat's were on guard as the time was drawing near.

A few minutes later, the time came for the pups to be born into the world. After they were born, they stumbled about a bit. Their eyes weren't open at this point and wouldn't be for a while. 2 girls and 1 boy. The girls would find they'd be in for a lot of trouble in their future as one of them would be chosen to be alpha after they'd battle it out to prove themselves worthy.

A month passed and the pups were ready for their first foraging trip. Laura was with her mother, Scarlett was with her aunt and Keiran was with his Uncle. Laura and Scarlett watched closely as they were shown how to forage for food whilst Keiran tried to steal his uncles catches. A sentry Meerkat was keeping an eye out for predators both in the air and on ground. Giving a peeping sound every couple of minutes to let the group know it was all clear. A few minutes passed and the sentry gave a loud bark like call signalling there were predators heading towards them. The group ran for it. Laura's mother quickly picked Laura up by the scruff behind her neck and dashed towards the burrow. Scarlett's aunt did the same to Scarlett and Keiran's uncle, the same to Keiran. A pack of Hyena's surrounded Keiran's uncle and soon started attacking. It wasn't long before Keiran's uncle was harshly killed. Laura could see Keiran was in danger, but despite her small size and strength, she ran towards Keiran. Laura's mother could only watch in horror as she watched her pup run straight into the path of danger. The hyena's were about to bite down on Keiran but Laura grabbed his paw and ran towards the burrow with Keiran in her safety. The hyena's growled and gave chase quickly catching up. Laura and Keiran dived into the burrow and panted, but were soon comforted by the loving arms of their mother.

Months passed and Scarlett was getting jealous of Laura's increase in chances of becoming the new alpha when the mother would pass and she decided today would be her chance to shine. She saw Laura and shouted to her. Laura ran over and was asked if she wanted to go on a little run with her sister. She agreed and both of them ran into the distance. A few minutes passed and Laura's mother came outside and didn't see Laura anywhere. Neither did she see Scarlett. She began to panic and quickly arranged a search party to find them. Eventually the search party was ready and they set off in 3 groups to find the two girls.

Laura and Scarlett were near a group of Lions. Laura didn't like this one bit and decided to try and bring Scarlett back but was halted quickly. Scarlett wasn't going to turn down a chance like this. She wanted to prove her worth by defeating a lion cub. Laura was struggling to bring her sister back to the burrow. Scarlett got angry and hit Laura to the floor then ran at a lion cub. The mother of the cub roars and pins down Scarlett. Laura was scared. She hoped her mother would be here to help her sister before it was too late. Luckily, her hopes were answered and her mother arrived. She pointed towards the lioness who was about to kill Scarlett and her mother pounced and clawed at the lioness, followed by the group's attacks. Scarlett ran back to Laura and they both cowered with their brother Keiran. The battle raged on but the Meerkat's were quickly over powered and the battered group retreated.

Hours passed and there was no sign of the rest of the group. And more importantly, no sign of the pups mother. Scarlett bounced around happily. She thought she'd be the new alpha. Laura got angry and hit her sister to the ground warning her to stop as this was a time of mourning. Laura had harsh visions in her mind of what could and most likely had happened to her mother, but she was trying to think that her mother had escaped and was on her way back.

Days passed and there was still no sign of her mother. Laura was beginning to lose all hope of ever seeing her mother again, but as she looked out to the horizon she saw a meerkat on the horizon. She ran to it and was greeted with a horrible sight. Her mother's body was being carried back to the burrow by a sentry. She kept denying the sight telling herself it was a nightmare but this nightmare was completely reality.

The next day, the group were standing around a grave they had dug for their loyal and loving alpha. Laura was upfront crying of heartbreak. Her sister, Scarlett, was no where to be seen and Keiran was hugging his uncle. Laura knew her sister was cold hearted. She knew that she never gave any care about the fact that her mother was gone. She knew that she only cared about being the next alpha of the group. Laura just hoped she could beat her sister when the time came for the showdown between them.

The time had come. It was time for the new alpha to be chosen. Laura was scared. Her sister was much taller and stronger than she was. Scarlett looked down at her sister with an evil grin. A few seconds later, Scarlett pounced and Laura wasn't expecting it. Scarlett bit down on Laura's neck and began to maul at it. Laura was instantly in danger and struggled to get her sister's crushing jaws from her neck before they shattered her spine. Keiran pounced onto Scarlett and attacked her but was quickly attacked by Scarlett too. Keiran was the smallest of the 3. Scarlett bit down around Keiran's neck and shook him violently until his body drooped dead. Scarlett grinned and threw her dead brother at a rock. Laura shook her head in disbelief. She was now fuelled by anger, sadness and fear. But she pulled herself together and lunged at her sister. Biting, clawing and hitting her violently in a major outburst of revenge and hatred. She had had enough of her sister's cold hearted ways and was going to make sure she couldn't harm anyone ever again. Scarlett struggled but Laura was too fast. She couldn't do anything. Eventually Laura gave the final bite to the neck and ended her sisters life. Even though deep down she loved her sister, she knew she had to do it, to protect the future of her group. She couldn't allow her sister to harm any more of her friends and family.

That night, Laura had became the new alpha. She decided to bury her brother and sister. She didn't go to bed. Instead, she spent the night with her dead loved ones. She left each grave a flower that she could find. But she saw a specific one she loved. And a bug that she hadn't seen in the desert before. It was pink and had 4 petal like wings. It was perched on a red rose. Laura smiled and took the rose and placed it on her mothers grave and then saw the bug land on her shoulder. And just before it flew off, she heard her mothers voice. It said;

"I'll always be with you my dear Laura. Anytime you feel upset or need guidance, seek the pink butterfly and I'll be there! I love you my dear and I'll always be in your heart"
