Hello all

For those who don't know if anyone here is intrested in pre-ordering the pandora, the pre-orders are now open ( http://www.openpandora.org/ ) . For those who don't know the pandora's a tiny computer+console, from memory roughly the size of the Nintendo DS. But unlike all those corporate gaming devices, namely your xboxes, PSPs and wii's the pandora has been developed by an online community, and the whole software running on it is open source, i.e. linux. Go have a look!

Sweet, I'm a sucker for those kinds of things. I have one of those GP2X handhelds that...well, like most things in my life, I played with a few times then forgot about it, but it was still cool. It was also a Linux-based handheld.

I've got a GP2X as well, though I also never really used mine either. I didn't use mine not because there were problems with it, I largely didn't use it because I'm not a really major gamesplayer, and the GP2X is largely skewed for playing games.

At the current time of writing however the pandora has sold 2000 out of 3000 systems in 6 hours. Probably they are all gone now x.x

I did see they're made by the same people. Meh, the GP2X is good enough for me. My goal when I get time/inclination is to get DOSBox running on it to play Frontier.

Ooh... this interests me... I might get one for when I'm at work... I'm guessing it will be able to support AIM and WLM... then I can use it... Hmm... and the internet being able to support FFX 3... hmmm...

Oops -- my mistook I should've explained that. Some of the people that are involved are connected with the GP2X. But the pandora is not being made by Gamepark holdings.

The software for AIM which I guess is still made by AOL is closed source I believe, so that won't work. WLM is in the same boat, it's closed source and propietary - that won't work either. Having said that there is an open source program which works with the AIM protocol, and I think also with the .net messenger service protocol called pidgin. It's completely open source, so all it would take is for someone to compile it, which I suspect someone will do as I am guessing several people will want this software.

Plus the pandora has built in wifi, so you won't need to hunt for a USB wireless device!

I've just checked on the openpandora website, and I think today's the last day to get your order in if you want one. There will be another batch however in 2009.
