Well...maybe? I mean, if we come across a decent gallery program that needs PHP, it's ready for it. I have to admit, the gallery replacement is fairly low on my priority list right now. I've been doing some minor swap-around with personal computers at home, and I'd rather attend to the main server first before attending to the offsite server.
For everyone's edification, I've been shopping around (so to speak) for the lowest-power-consuming server replacement option for the main LD5 server. I do have some pretty hefty server hardware at my disposal, but at ratings well over 300 watts, I can get a server together that's cooler and uses only about 120 watts, but I'm waiting for some memory, and I'm still thinking about getting a true hardware RAID card, but I'm thinking with the multiple levels of backups I'll have, I don't really need any RAID in the equation any more.
You see, I'm also going to virtualize the server. For those who don't know, when you virtualize a server it means it's running on special virtualization software, kinda like how you can run a PlayStation emulator on a PC. It gives me several advantages: first, it's not tied down to particular hardware. That means that if the actual server hardware I was running it on crashed and burned, I could copy it over to just about any other piece of hardware I have the virtualization software installed on and run it without having to reinstall everything. Second, it means that I can run multiple virtual servers on the same hardware...right now, I have all LD5 functions (and then some) running on one server. I could install a Linux virtual server and run a mail server on it, and run it right beside the main server, transitioning off services to whatever works best. Finally, I can take whole-hog backups of the entire server in a snap, and even take a 'snapshot' of the server before I do something risky, and if it screws the pooch, roll back to the snapshot point in just a few moments.
So yes, I've been quiet but I've been pretty busy behind the scenes for LD5. I've put off Faibanx 3D work for this server work, so I'm eager to get it done so I can get back to giant stomping 3D claws and stuff.
